Whether you've got a free Saturday morning or a few hours after work, there's a place for you. Our volunteers help collect cans, support community events, coordinate drop-off locations, spread the word, and connect with their neighbors. No experience is needed — just energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to make a difference.
Volunteering isn't just about picking up cans. It's about building connections, supporting your community, and being part of a team that's making a measurable difference across Pierce County.
There are plenty of ways to get involved. Pick a role that fits your interests, schedule, and strengths.
Can Drive Organizers are the captains of our community collection effort — individuals who take the initiative to register, plan, and execute aluminum can drives at their schools, workplaces, faith communities, or neighborhoods. As a Can Drive Organizer, you'll have access to our Drive Starter Kit, support from our Community Outreach team, and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts contributed a measurable number of cans to our statewide total. Drives can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose — what matters is that you show up and invite your community to do the same.
Event Support Volunteers assist the 2 Million Can Challenge team at community events, can drives, awareness campaigns, and fundraising activities throughout Washington State. Tasks may include setting up and breaking down event spaces, greeting participants, distributing materials, staffing information tables, and helping with can collection and transport logistics. Event Support Volunteers are our most visible ambassadors, and their enthusiasm directly shapes the experience of every community member who encounters the Challenge at an event.
Social Media Ambassadors help amplify the 2 Million Can Challenge's message across digital platforms by sharing content, writing posts, engaging with followers, and recruiting new participants through their personal networks. This role is ideal for individuals who are active on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, or other platforms and want to contribute to the mission without a major time commitment. Ambassadors receive talking points, approved graphics, and hashtag guidance to ensure their posts are consistent with our brand voice and messaging.
Stipend Application Reviewers serve on the volunteer committee that reads, evaluates, and scores applications for the annual graduation stipend program — one of the most meaningful and consequential volunteer roles in our organization. Reviewers are trained on our evaluation rubric, complete a conflict-of-interest disclosure, and participate in a collaborative review process that identifies the most deserving recipients from our applicant pool. This role requires a commitment of approximately 8–12 hours during the application review season, and reviewers must be willing to approach applications with fairness, confidentiality, and care.
Community Outreach Partners work alongside our staff to identify new communities, organizations, and venues that could benefit from or contribute to the 2 Million Can Challenge. This role is ideal for individuals with strong community networks — teachers, faith leaders, neighborhood association members, business owners, or anyone who has relationships with organizations that might want to host a drive, serve as a drop-off location, or partner with the Alliance. Community Outreach Partners help us grow the roots of the mission in places our staff haven't yet reached.
